Genre

The genre is essentially the type of writing being used. Certain topics or projects will require different forms of writing. Throughout this semester we have successfully learned how to create a memorandum, a technical description, a lab report, and an engineering proposal. All these projects required different genres for different purposes. Each genre is to help the author express their ideas in the most effective way depending on the scenario.

For example, writing my memo had to be different than writing my technical description. The memo required I state the name of the recipient and the names of all my group members and their titles (Figure 1). While the technical description was much less formal requiring only a cover page with basic information on it. (Figure 2). Below you can see the difference between how each project is started.
